Calais overlooks the passage of Dover, the narrowest point in the English Channel, which is only 34 km (21 miles) wide here, and is the closest French town to England. The white cliffs of Dover can easily be seen on a clear day from Calais.Considered the busiest waterway in the world Dover to Calais is operated by P&O Ferries and Sea France with crossing times just under 1 1/2 hours.
The city's proximity to England has made it a major port for centuries. It is the principal ferry crossing point between England and France, with the vast majority of Channel crossings being made between Dover and Calais. The French end of the Channel Tunnel is also situated in the vicinity of Calais, in Coquelles some 4 miles (6 km) to the west of the town.
Calais boasts some glorious sandy beaches and as well as numerous shopping outlets including its flagship Cite Europe shopping centre.
Getting to Calais:
From the A26 heading north
Take the main A26 Calais Toll road north towards Calais. Take the exit toward E15 and travel for 0.2 km. Keep left at the fork and follow the signs for A16/E40/Boulogne/Calais-Ouest. Travel for 0.3 km take exit number 18 toward Calais-Est. After 0.4 km, merge onto the E15 and travel for 7.5 km and follow the signs for Cars Ferry Terminal. Upon arrival at the Port follow the designated lanes for customs and immigration and on to your chosen cross channel operator be it SeaFrance or P&O.
